Illegal, Unfair, and Undermining America
What’s worse than a cruel, tyrannical leader? You know, the Saddam Husseins of the world. How about a leader so determined to bring about their own agenda that they will go against their government, the majority of their people, and even violate the law to see it happen, all the while proclaiming equality and freedom for all. Can you guess who we’re talking about here?
On November 20, 2014 President Obama signed a series of Executive Orders related to United States Immigration Policies. There is a proper way, as set forth in the Constitution, for the U.S. government to create and amend it’s laws and policies…this is not that way. Included in this set of unilateral Executive Orders would be the granting of work permits and a halt to deportations for approximately 5 million undocumented illegal aliens currently in the United States. As so many legal citizens continue to struggle to find work, this Presidential action makes that task increasingly more difficult by flooding the workplace with new ‘legal’ labor. On the surface, recent unemployment numbers would seem to indicate a decrease in those seeking jobs but ask any analyst and they’ll tell you what’s actually happening is more and more job seekers are simply giving up and dropping out of the labor pool altogether. What this means longterm for America is not promising. What it means related to President Obama’s recent immigration actions is that legal U.S. citizens are being unfairly penalized as they compete for jobs.
Is Immigration the Problem?
Now let’s be clear, there’s nothing wrong with legal immigration. We shouldn’t seal the borders and become isolationists. America was founded by immigrants and so much of what continues to make us great is the diversity that immigration brings. That’s one of the beautiful things that has always made the United States such a unique country. What’s NOT right or fair to the millions and millions of citizens who have gone through the legal process of citizenship is when Congress is bypassed with the stroke of a pen and millions of illegal immigrants get to jump to the front of the line. “More than unfair, it’s insulting to everyone who’s gone through the proper citizenship process,” said John Arwood, a Florida business owner. “When new administrations come in and we have perspective on Obama, I believe he’ll go down in history as the worst U.S. President, even surpassing Jimmy Carter.” Arwood may very well be right. Under President Carter’s administration the country faced high unemployment, high inflation, slow economic growth, and numerous international incidents–many created by his policy decisions. It was only after his one term in office that President Carter really became known as a human rights advocate. Knowing the effort that was required to fix Carter’s policies, whoever succeeds Obama will definitely have their work cut out for them.
Even Obama Said It’s Illegal
It’s true. In a 2013 interview with Telemundo, Obama said himself that executive action on immigration would be “ignoring the law in a way that I think would be very difficult to defend legally.” As it turns out, he may get the chance to prove himself correct. Seventeen states, led by Texas, have joined together in a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of Obama’s actions on Immigration. In Pennsylvania, federal court Judge Arthur Schwab has declared aspects of Obama’s executive orders as unconstitutional because the policy goes “beyond prosecutorial discretion” and exceeds the authority of the Executive Branch of government. The U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee chairman, Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) stated, “President Obama has once again abused his authority and unilaterally refused to enforce our current immigration laws by directing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to stop removing broad categories of unlawful immigrants.”
The founders of the U.S. Constitution were clear about the need for separation of powers between the Judicial, Executive, and Legislative Branches of government in order to prevent what we are now experiencing. President Obama’s actions, by his own admission, are a stretch beyond his Constitutional authority. Best case scenario, he found a loophole that allowed him to stretch his authority beyond what our founders intended. Worst case scenario, he violated the Constitution and should face impeachment. Either way, is that the kind of leader our country needs?
Saturday Night Live is far from what you’d call a right wing conservative TV show. But as this sketch points out, the illegality of President Obama’s actions is so blatantly obvious that it’s comical. You don’t have to be a judicial scholar for this to make sense. Any child (or adult) who’s seen the original Schoolhouse Rock! cartoon, parodied above, can see that what Obama has done is simply not legal under the Constitution.
What’s Really Happening Here?
Now we come to the big burning question that few are talking about related to immigration. What’s the connection between Obama’s unilateral and seemingly unconstitutional action on immigration and his surprise announcement near the end of December 2014 that the U.S. would begin to normalize relations with Cuba? There appears to be a larger agenda that Mr. Obama is attempting to push through. Between his amnesty for illegal immigrants and concessions to the dictatorial Castro-led Cuban government, it looks like Obama is seeking to shape a new America. What is his true agenda and what is he doing to America? Only time will tell but we have a responsibility as citizens to examine his actions and question his intentions.
