Suppression of a Nation
What race has been the most mistreated? What race has been synonymous with words like oppression, slavery, and especially persecution? With all the news media outlets focusing on the Black Lives Matter movement or focusing on the religious groups associated with terrorism it may never occur to you that the biggest group to undergo repression is actually the Native Americans. My grandfather was a full Cherokee Indian, a Native America to this land born and raised. But when is the last time a Native American made the news? When is the last time there was advocacy for the better treatment of Native American. There has not been. These entire groups of people, countless tribes spread all across the continental United States are suppressed by the government, and where is the justice for them.
Native Americans are the most mistreated group in this country. The government tried to redeem mistakes from the past by developing reservations, claiming that these people, my people, would have land all to themselves to continue their traditions and maintain their heritage and practices without the disruption of the government. But it’s all a facade. The truth is the government can come in at any time and rip parts of this designated land out from under them if there is something beneficial to society outside the tribal walls. How can we let this happen? How can we mistreat and entire group of people all across the land? If they can do that to Native Americans, who’s to say that the governments won’t do it to some other group.
I pose a question to you. When is the last time you saw a full blooded Native American at the grocery story, or at a movie theater. Why don’t you see this enormous population of people anywhere? This series I am writing I hope drives home a lot of issues with today’s society and how corrupt everything from the government to school systems are, and how bias they are against this creed of people. The development of reservations is only the beginning of how the government started the suppression of Native Americans and ultimately causes an entire race to become impoverished, corrupt, and soon to be forgotten. Something must be done and I hope to start something.
